Prompt 27

“Something you found”

When I was a little girl, I used to take my teddy bear everywhere with me. I mean everywhere. Whether we were going to the grocery store, or on a train, or to visit my grandparents, I always had my bear suspended from my pinky finger by the tag on its behind.

One day the bear just disappeared. He was nowhere to be found. I searched all through the house to no avail and was ultimately convinced that our dogs had found him and torn him to bits.

Naturally, I was devastated, but being the child that I was, I bounced back from my misery eventually and went on with my life.

A couple of months later, I was staying with my grandparents as my parents were away. My grandparents’ house, as one might imagine,  was a treasure trove for children to explore and was filled with nooks and crannies waiting to reveal their stories. There was even an attic where my grandmother stored old carnival costumes and jewellery she no longer wore, which was a source of great entertainment and multiple dress-up games.

On one of my expeditions through the house where I was searching for an interesting item that my grandmother might have a story about, I was looking through the guest bathroom, which had previously provided me with an antique mirror and brush set. After finding a few empty drawers, I turned to the cabinet under the sink. Much to my surprise, my bear was in there! He sat there casually as if that was exactly where he should have been all along and staring at me accusingly for not having found him earlier.

Getting over my surprise, I snatched him up quickly and dashed off to tell the news. I can tell you that it was a long time before he was let out of my sight again!
